DigitalRemnant is a media production and game development studio exploring the manner in which community labor becomes
victim to mythologization. It was founded by an individual visual artist exploring the intersections of character design, 3D modeling,
stories.
My investment in game development started simple— coming across images of Rugrats: Search for Reptar (1998) for the Playstation.
I was fascinated by how similar the game looked to modern horror games developed to mimic Playstation 1 games. From there,
I dove deep into the history of the console's game releases, their development, and the arduous process of distilling grand ideas into something
the console could execute. That quickly led to realization: early games didn't all look primitive— the degree of detail and world building in
a game came from its developers' investments in creating works of art to accompany a story. Modern attempts to mimic the era were not close to
their predecessors. They were imitations based on a false understanding of early visual art pipelines; a false notion that early video games
are inherently empty, lacking detail, and being quickly put together by people with limited knowledge in their respective fields.
Following this, DigitalRemnant was founded to produce games exploring a wide range of themes and eras— not just limited to the Playstation—
to challenge modern myths that have understated the creative labor that has historically been invested into video games by passionate people.
Recent industry-wide mass layoffs have left those in game development fearful that the industry will become one that no longer innovates or
appreciates the labor of their developers, visual artists, music producers, writers, and so much more. Large scale development has historically
ignored all of these classes, but DigitalRemnant will continue to uplift these processes and creators while centering unique story narratives.
